A special thanks to Empire Today for sponsoring this post.
Several months ago I found myself complaining about not having enough space in our home. Ever since Bennett was born it has felt like our house is getting smaller and smaller everyday! Rather than complain I decided to do something about it. We have a 300 square foot finished basement that has been collecting dust since we bought our house. Brett has had a make-shift office space down there and I’ve had a second hand home decor store down there (all the decor I change up has to go somewhere, ya know?!) I made the decision to turn this space into useful space: A playroom-office!
We started by selling a ton of things, had the walls painted white, Brett replaced the trim, and I painted a giant mural on the wall (more to come on that soon!) So what does this have to do with new carpet?! Everything! Replacing the carpet transformed this space. The carpet in the basement was awful, you guys! It was thick, dark, and needed to be replaced BAD. I had seen commercials on TV for Empire Today so I went online and scheduled a free in-home estimate. It was SO nice not having to get out of the house to go to a hardware store, look at samples, and give measurements (especially with a toddler). Instead someone came to our home, showed me samples, took measurements and gave me an estimate within a few minutes.
BEFORE
A few of the pattern carpet samples shown to me during our free in-home estimate. Motivate carpet samples shown.
I knew I wanted a low pile, patterned carpet (much lighter than what we had before). It took me no time to land on the Motivate series in the color Canvas. This carpet is also stain and soil resistant! It is a good lighter option that doesn’t read beige / yellow but more-so grey. We selected a rug pad that has plastic over the top – This way dust and dirt doesn’t sink down into the rug pad. The installers were professional and fast! They had the old carpet torn up and haul out within a half hour!
The carpet pad laid down.
The new carpet drastically changed the space! It truly looks like a brand new addition (smells like one too)! It is so much brighter and updated. The low pile carpet option looks great on the stairs and the pattern gives it some texture / interest.
AFTER
This space looks so much more finished! Empire Today has a great selection of carpet (and other types of flooring too). If y’all are in the market check them out!

Hi Jamie, where is your area rug in your playroom from?
Megan says
I was just about to ask the same thing but I found it at world market!

This looks wonderful! We’re doing something similar with our basement currently. What color is the ceiling painted? Thanks!!

question regarding the rug on top of the carpet.
How do you keep it from slipping? I have carpet in our basement and we put a colorful ruggable rug on top but it will not stay still. It constantly ripples and moves
Jamie says
Ruggable rugs tend to do that. We used to have one in our dining room. This is a thicker wool rug

I am now in the market. Love the idea of a patterned carpet but think I need a dark carpet as our current light carpet has now stains. WONDERING how the ‘stain/soil resistant’ carpet it holding up??
Jamie says
It’s holding up great! Still looks new
Amanda says
I love the accent wall! Is it painted or wallpaper?
Jamie says
Paint!

What brand and style / color is the carpet you chose?
