A special thanks for Walmart for sponsoring this post!
My style has evolved drastically over the last four years! Initially I was all about the farmhouse style – Shiplap, magnolia wreaths, and antiques everywhere! My style now is much more modern / Scandinavian but I still have so many farmhouse / rustic pieces in our home. I don’t know about y’all but I can’t ditch everything in our home simply because my style changed overnight. For that reason – I have blended my rustic pieces with my new modern pieces.
Does this sound familiar? I feel like a lot of us jumped on the shabby chic bandwagon and are looking to update our homes a bit – Am I right? Walmart Home has a ton of great pieces that work well for those looking to blend rustic and modern styles. Their products are all affordable and great quality! I have been “refreshing” our home one room at a time and have a few tips and tricks for those of y’all looking to do the same!
1. Take it one room at a time!
There is no rush. If you look at your entire house and everything you’d like to change, you’ll feel completely overwhelmed! Baby steps, baby steps.
2. Decide which pieces will stay and which will go!
I am guilty of feeling attached to things I no longer love. For example, in our room we bought a huge farmhouse style headboard a few years back and at the time I HAD TO HAVE. Fast forward three years, I no longer loved it and felt like it was holding me back from really updating our room but I had this emotional attachment to it because I remembered how much I loved it when I bought it and how I saved my pennies for it. In the end, I decided to sell it and I’m so glad I did! Updating our headboard made a big difference in the space! Same goes for our guest room, when I decided to ditch our old bed and go for this iron bed, the room was instantly transformed! The moral of the story – Don’t be afraid to sell things (even if you once loved them)!
3. Make a design board / collage before getting started!
I use an app called Diptic to create collages. I put a picture of our room (as-is) in the center and then pieces I am loving / looking to buy all around it so I can see how it looks together! Here’s a look at a collage I made for our dining room refresh.
4. SHOP! Start with items that make the biggest impact!
For example – Update your bedspread or swap out your rug – Save the throw pillows and “fluff” for last. In our master bedroom I bought a new rug (this one) and then everything else fell into place! In our dining room, these chairs changed the game – Not to mention they are SUPER affordable.
Here’s a few “before” and after pics to show y’all rooms I have refreshed as of late.
